Composting (Green) Carts

Happy composting, compliments of the City Council! We noticed this morning (Monday) that a number of our units still have green carts at the curb, and several have them outside their garage doors. In checking on the city composting website (http://austintexas.gov/page/curbside-composting-faq) , anyone who wishes to opt out of the composting collection may have their cart picked up: Can I opt out of Curbside Composting Collection? If you do not wish to use your new green cart you can call 3-1-1, and ARR will arrange for your green cart to be picked up. Please note that you will still be charged for the service whether you chose to participate or not. We ask that you give it a try for a week or two before making the decision to send back your cart. Remember that you can save money by using your recycling and composting carts correctly, and downsizing your trash cart size. Some of our neighbors have looked at what can be composted, and have decided to reduce the size of their trash or recycling cart to make room for all three different-colored carts in their garage, since many composting materials (newspapers, pizza boxes, etc.) were taking up space in their other trash cans, and they don’t mind sorting out the materials. Other neighbors have decided this is too many carts for them and wish to return them. Regardless of your choice, please remember that our by-laws require trash carts to be removed from the street within 24 hours after pickup. While this time period is flexible, trash carts left out too long will elicit a reminder and/or fine as in the past. In the meantime, such reminders and fines will be suspended until July 15 while our neighbors decide whether to keep or return their composting carts.
